This novel isn't scary, but it's very creepy, with a growing sense of unease. Would you classify it as a horror novel? How does Wells use story-telling to build the mood?

There it must be, I think, in the vast and eternal laws of matter, and not in the daily cares and sins and troubles of men, that whatever is more than animal within us must find it's solace and it's hope. I hope, or I could not live. And so, in hope and solitude, my story ends.”

What's the significance or Prendick's last monologue, do you think?

There are two main kinds of characters in the novel – those who were born human, and those born animal. Apart from their origin story, what distinguishes the two groups? Was one group more human than the other, in the end? How does gender factor into things?

The scenario presented in the book seems eminently adventurous. Can you think of a use in gaming? Are there any games that capture the themes? Would you ever adapt the island to another setting? Uplifted animals are common in SF gaming these days, but are are they just anthropomorphic people, or are the consequences of uplifting ever examined in depth?

“No thanks – I'm an abstainer.”

Mongomery partakes, Prendick abstains, and the captain is a drunk. What role does alcohol play in the story? It seems to alter Montgomery's character, and he's always referring to things a being 'rum'. Is it significant that Prendick doesn't drink the Cool-Aid?

“Overboard,” said the captain. “This ship ain't for beasts and cannibals, and worse than beasts, any more. Overboard you go...”

We meet four communities in the novel. The first and smallest is that of the Lady Vain – a group of three men (one named Helman) with not enough food or water. The second is the ship, Ipecacuanha, where we first meet Montgomery, M'ling, and the Captain. Doctor Moreau's Island is the third, where we meet Moreau and the beasts. And lastly, Prendick returns home to England, where he struggles to find a place. What do these have in common? How are they different? Is there an allegory we can attribute to these four communities?

The island is unnamed. Why do you suppose not? Why hasn't Moreau given the Beast People a name?
Many other names do exist in the book – Moreau, Montgomery, Prendick, M'ling – can we infer something from them? The ships are also named: Lady Vain, Scorpion, Myrtle, Medusa, and the Ipecacuanha. Is there a theme?

“With all his noble qualities… with all these exalted powers, man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin”

The above is a quote is actually from Darwin's The Descent of Man, published in 1871, a work that surely inspired Wells. Moreau is clearly trying to step outside of the natural course of evolution. Is he trying to accelerate the process, or to do something else? What future do these uplifted animals have? What future do the humans in the story have? Evolution is usually seen in opposition to the bible, but is that how it's presented here? Were evolution and Christianity in opposition in 1896 as they are now?

As I was reading this, I got to thinking that the novel was a textbook thriller. I found the opening chapters extremely suspenseful. Did you agree? Was there anything about the structure that particularly grabbed you - the pacing? the build and release of tension? The foreshadowing? Does the novel carry this momentum to the end?
