I found it easiest to read them as an anthology of completely separate short stories mixed in with random travel guide listings. Far more enjoyable.

(Quote) They are not people, they are symbols. They are symbols set up as opposites to embody a principle the author wanted to play with. They have no life beyond that embodiment. They are characters the same way the letter X is a character. (Quote…

(Quote) This was my reply, which was not mentioned and thus looked like this was Richard's reply (Quote) Apologies. I was thinking about Bathurst and Kammeston and Yo. I had forgotten about Kaine. (Quote) We agree to disagree here. You seem to hav…

(Quote) More circling back. Reinforcement in case you didn't get it yet. (Quote) No. They are both pretty much jerks in the book. (Quote) Like most authors, he hasn't the slightest idea on what the military actually do or how they work, so he make…

(Quote) I missed that! D'oh! (Quote) It's Priest. There is no smoking gun. There may be a smoking jacket, or perhaps a smoking hot character which tangentially relates if you tilt your head and look at it sideways, but effects have no direct causes…

(Quote) I was getting angry and frustrated because I felt he was handing me jigsaw puzzle pieces from different but similar puzzles. This way I can appreciate each story on its own without feeling like in connects somehow with the others. (Quote) I…

(Quote) I don't really understand the question. These are obviously different stories, why would the use of these elements be the same? (Quote) No. I've decided to treat each chapter as entirely unrelated to anything else. It helps immensely for me…

(Quote) Neither. Just different in my opinion. (Quote) Traces are apparently some kind of residual psychic emanations or some such. There certainly appeared to be some such manifestation in the account. Whether it was objectively (in world) real or…

(Quote) This is awesome! I remember a time when academics refused to admit that there were any written language systems native to the Americas with the possible exception of Mayan. They've come a long way!

It was bathtub booze. The torpedo juice was pure ethyl alcohol, and figured in a prank in the R&R chapter in Brisbane. Torpedo Juice wouldn't hurt anyone. The two in the conning tower incident couldn't get their hands on any torpedo juice and ac…

(Quote) Maturity? I would just call it personal preference. I was curious how different people reacted to this deliberate lack of a single viewpoint character. I think since the 80s, there have been more and more movies and TV shows with a strong en…

There was only one black person on the boat - the cook - who was only noted for being black in passing, when he was shot. Perhaps not enough opportunity for racism? The vast majority of cooks/stewards in the navy were black or Filippino in WWII. The…

Huh. The wife-beater was apparently trying to turn his life around at the end. He seemed to have learned his lessons and was functioning well as Exec. We don't know about his private life at the end, except that his wife divorced him and he was livi…
