Being a romance novel, the central facet of the story is the the romance between Davik and Leucida. As a romance novel, it lives or dies on this relationship. Did it work for you? Why or why not?

Other than the aforementioned juvenile aspects, it worked for me. Except - call me weird if you like - I kept being perplexed anatomically! Would an alien amphibious creature, however appealling on many interpersonal levels, have sexual apparatus that was sufficiently similar to human to make a go of it?

The romance followed the usual progression in these stories: an initial and somewhat irrational attraction, followed by various fumblings as the two people come to accept their feelings and realise the other has the same feelings. It was OK, it's just that I didn't like the writing and didn't particularly care about the characters.

As for the physiological differences, I refer you to Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex [[ link ]] by Larry Niven as an exploration of another example of cross-species attraction.
