The Works of Vermin C: Prose Style

What's the writing like? Poetic? Plain? Busy? Purple? Overly adjectived? Is it nice to read? Does it serve the subject matter? Did you find yourself noting down passages from the book because I you them?

Exhausting to read! Every time I sat down to read it there was this sense of "this isn't going to be a peaceful ride". Now I totally get that books need a mix of action and rest... but where was the rest? Did I believe that the characters in that world - any of them, from low to high - would survive through to old age? I thought some aspects of it were clever and inventive (for example the whole business of scent as a primary communication device) but on balance I can't remember enjoying any of the bits that I read.

I thought it was pretty visceral in many ways, which I often don't mind. However, the density of the prose mixed in with the weirdness of the concepts just made it such a slog. @RichardAbbott you described it well. Exhausting to read.
