I don't have permission to create the poll. Would someone with the permissions kindly make a poll with three choices: 1) War of the Maps; 2) The Man Who Fell to Earth; and 3) Cloud Atlas. Thanks!

For details of the books see this discussion:

So Cloud Atlas it is. I'm looking forward to it - thanks for mentioning it @Apocryphal. I'm curious to find out how it is put together - episodic? collage? something else? Based on the poll it will be 4 or 5 of us reading, but I encourage everyone to join in. Initial questions will be posted in about a month.

To help with my housekeeping please post any questions comments suggestions etc. in this thread. Thanks!

I have added a new category under Monthly Book Selections for this - please remember to add to your notifications so you don't miss out :)

The direct link is https://www.ttrpbc.com/categories/102-(august-2021)-cloud-atlas-by-david-mitchell or as usual it appears under the Monthly Book Selections menu item.

Like a Russian Doll, is how it's often described.

I enjoyed the film, so I'm interested see what the book's like.

I hadn't realised it was made into a film until I read the preface

It's fun. It's a bit of a mess, but it has Tom Hanks enjoying being a villain at one point, and Hugo Weaving has a great time chewing the scenery as a spooky apparition.

It's been criticised for a bout of yellowface, where the actors are made up to play ethnically East Asian characters in one sequence. Perhaps that's something we could include in the discussion, if it fits?

I didn’t vote, since I haven’t been active the last few months. I’ve been reading everything, but I haven’t been getting finished in time to discuss. I’m starting tonight on Cloud Atlas.

Just watched the film twice over over the weekend! It's rare for us to enjoy something so much (and feel it's complex enough) to warrant seeing it again so soon.

Obviously the film uses a different structure to the book, but appropriately so (I think) for the different choice of medium. And there are sufficient points of contact you don't feel you're encountering a different story

Hope everyone is having a good end to summer. A quick reminder to encourage anyone who might like to join that our discussion will begin Labour day. Cheers! BC
