Arkhangelsk 4 - Anya and Maddie
Anya and Maddie quickly develop a tight relationship, but the nature of this relationship is left ambiguous, Bonesteel never explicitly commenting on it. What did you think that relationship was, and did the way Bonesteel handled it work for you?

Yes, I thought it was handled well and to my mind convincingly.
By the 2/3 mark, I definitely thought they were heading into a romantic relationship. By the end I wasn't so sure they go there, but maybe. I'm glad it was ambiguous - every author and their aunt wants to write lesbian relationships these days. It has become the expected thing to do, along with writing unconvincingly about other cultures.
Yes, they were clearly a couple who deeply cared for each other. It perhaps started a bit too fast to be believable, but once established I think it rang true. I liked that the friendship side of the relationship was more important than any romantic or sexual elements. That relationship formed a nice contrast with the one between Hina and Aleksey.
I thought they were both repressed people who proved incapable of freeing themselves from their selves.
I loved that it was left somewhat abiguous. Very refreshing actually. I am unsure if the characters themselves knew exactly what was going on between them.
