@WildCard You can't change the notifications for individual threads, only for the categories into which threads are posted.
When it comes to new categories, the default for selection is 'off', so when a new category is created, you have to manually turn on the notifications for it. If Clash had created a category for Final Harbour and posted his discussions into it, you wouldn't have been notified.
The reason you got notifications for these threads is because nobody had yet created a 'Final Harbour' category for them, so Clash posted them into the 'Nominations and Suggestions' category instead - and this happened to be one you had marked for notifications.
So then you went looking to turn off a category that didn't exist yet, and naturally you couldn't find it.
That evening, when I got home, I created a new category called '98. Final Harbour' and I moved the posts into it. So, that's the current status. That's why you can now see the category there and it's de-selected - because that's the default for new categories.
