I suppose it's like Animal Farm... all characters are villainous, but some are more villainous than others! I don't think that anyone comes over as especially heroic, though some individuals are treated more sympathetically than others.
As I've said elsewhere, Bird is a clear villain. He's a murderous psychopath who destroys his entire community on the altar of his revenge. Christophe is earnestly trying to do the best by his values, even though we (modern post-colonial Westerners) now disagree with those values. Snow Falls is attempting to make the best of her situation, so I don't think she counts as either.
Are there any heroes? Is anyone attempting great deeds for the benefits of others? Christophe certainly thinks of himself as a hero, and his peers would mostly agree (even if that admiration is fleeting and insufficient to make them support his attempts). Gosling is too enigmatic to be either hero or villain. Most of the other characters are people buffeted by events rather than attempting to make their own ways.
I'm with Richard. No heroes, just villains.
