Sword at Sunset: Question Three

1

The book's major theme (right there in the title) is that of a struggle which will ultimately fail, but is still necessary. And maybe there's a glimmer of hope as the struggle goes on. Does this theme appeal? Are there any major themes you picked out?

I think any theme that asks 'what do we do with the time we are given' is an interesting one. Certainly there are other themes - filial vs. romantic love, what it means to be a husband or father, and to a lesser degree the clash of cultures are all given some space in this book. The matter of pride is also explored somewhat.

I think it is a wonderful theme. Very Arthurian!

Also a theme that Tolkien drew on, especially for the elves: "We have fought the long defeat"...
