Sun of Suns 2) The Characters

Most of the main characters have ambivalent motives and partially-hidden back-stories. Did that work for you? Which (if any) of the characters did you find most interesting?

Hands down Venera. Cool monster that she is!

I really liked how the characters were not just one thing - that is, they all exhibited change, and I don't necessarily mean change over the course of the story since for some of them that change happened in their past (eg Chaison's relationship with The Pilot). That made them feel multidimensional to me. They also didn't really fit common tropes, such as the 'quirky snarky tech guy' and the 'mewling nasty villain' (both of which we saw in the last book). Instead we got Hayden, the competent blue-collar everyman out for revenge, but who later didn't feel the burning need to exact that revenge, and Aubri, the friendly tech person who turned out to be much more than met the eye (or less, depending on your point of view I guess). And Chaison was not the brutal killer we thought he might be... etc.

I suppose I thought Aubri was the most interesting. Also, I couldn't help but think Aubri Mahallan was an open nod to to the Aubrey-Maturin stories of Patrick O'Brien.

That's a nice connection which hadn't occurred to me

Aubri and Verena were the two most interesting characters. Aubri was a bit enigmatic and Verena had her own agenda, manipulating people around her. Hayden and Chaison were a bit one-dimensional and dull.

Hayden's inner conflict, between hating the people of Slipstream while liking the crew of the Rook, would have been more interesting if I'd cared. It seemed a bit by-the-numbers to be engaging.
