3. Infinity: A Bridger's Story - SafeTrek
Did the company - SafeTrek - work for you? Do you think it made sense as a company set up to exploit a new phenomenon? What were its strong points? weak points? Would you have made any changes if you were running this as a game?

For all the reasons stated elsewhere it makes no sense to pitch it to scientists. It would be more likely as a kind of (very) extreme sport for bored rich folk, where the inherent dangers could be put right in the foreground.
If I were running the company I'd focus research on two things a) a way to get back home quickly in an emergency without having to wait until my preset timer ran down and b) a way to send material things over with the team. Without these it's basically a very expensive kind of Russian Roulette.
PlotDevice Inc .. sorry, SafeTrek, existed purely to set up the violent portal fantasy setting of the book. It makes no sense whatsoever. It doesn't matter. It's some hand-waving to get the plot started, and it does that adequately.
I guess we all agree here! The business model of SafeTrek was a joke, and made no sense whatsoever. I kept waiting to find out that this was some kind of cover for another operation that actually paid the bills, but that never came...
