@WildCard -- no judgment from me. Honestly, I've decided not to feel guilty for dropping in and out. I want to commit to more of the books chosen, but I am doing what I can. And that's good enough. LOL

I just stumbled across this video about the history of the torpedo that features so prominently in this book.
This was great, Neil! Thank you! This shows the multiple layers of problems the Mark 14 had, so that each fix revealed yet another problem. Once the Mark 14s particular problems were licked, the submarine war became devastating to Japan. One thing the video didn't actually note - because of the Mark 14 shortage, the US Navy was giving subs only partial loads of Mark 14s, supplemented with Mark 10s left over from WWI. The Mark 10s were far more reliable within their shortcomings, and when used in the proper manner - at short range, against slower, unarmored ships - they were reasonably effective despite their age.
Also, when I access this site on my PC or phone, it’s puts all the most recent activity at the top of the front page, just under the pinned threads. All I need to do to read recent activity is swipe up one finger. Threads with new activity are one colour, and the rest are another. It sounds like other user experiences are different from mine, so I’m curious to know how and why they differ across other platforms. Especially if something is making it hard to find recent activity.

I’ve been tied up lately but will try to do when I get home from work. Since you are a mod you have the power to make categories, yourself, FYI.
I always forget that I HAVE THE POWER MWAHAHAHAHA!
... I also forget how to use that power...
Seniors! Can't live with 'em, can't... why CAN'T we just put them on ice floes and push them off?

Infinite are the arguments of user-interface specialists, and most especially those marketing individuals responsible for defining the standard look and feel of interfaces on different hardware platforms...
I still don’t have a clue how the notifications work on this site. I went to turn off the notifications for posts in the discussion for this book, but they don’t even show up in my notification options. I’ve got options for every monthly discussion up to this month’s, but this month’s are nowhere to be seen.
Ok. I searched for 4 minutes using every avenue that looked sensible to me and ... nothing. Finally I found them by clicking on @clash_bowley's avatar, then on Discussions under his name, to see what he had been posting and that's where I found the questions.
It's bothering me that people are finding it hard. I'd like to fix the issue, but I'd need to know more about what people see when they come to the site in order to help. Accessing recent discussions seems very easy to me on both PC and I-Phone:
Method 1: via the RECENT DISCUSSIONS page: Scroll down a bit and they are there. This 'RECENT DISCUSSIONS page is the default for me on both my PC and I-phone when I navigate to the club, so I don't have to select anything - just scroll a bit to find all the latest activity.
Method 2: On my PC, there is a list of discussion categories on the left. I can pick MONTHLY BOOK SELECTIONS -> then the very first choice is FINAL HARBOUR -> click on then to get discussions. Finding them this way is harder on my phone - I have to scroll to the bottom, just above the Vanilla logo, there's a text button called 'full site' which gives me access to the full PC version, then proceed as described above.
I ask again, what do other people see when they come to the site? Screenshots welcome.
I normally respond to email notifications which take me straight to the relevant page, and do regular checks in the settings to make sure that I have flagged all of the discussion areas to notify me. If I go instead to the main home page ttrbc.com then the discussion list is in an order I don't fully understand, maybe it's the date when the thread was started? Or last added to? But in any case you don't have to scroll far to get to active discussions.
If I go to Recent Discussions then it's pretty much as @Apocryphal said, though the order listed doesn't quite make sense to me (I would personally have coded it to show at the top the thread most recently appended to, but I think what the team have done is pull Announcements to the top of the list in date order, and then shown active discussions underneath that.
Or as you say, trawl through the menu of discussions on the left to find the right one.
All that on a Windows PC. On an Android phone I don't find the mobile view very helpful and generally switch to desktop view to navigate to where I want using the above strategy, then flip back to mobile to read it as the font setting is much more usable. But again I generally go straight to where I want via notification.
Well shit. Sure. Now it works like that! I swear to you it wasn't working like that the other day! (And I know this statement defies logic.) I feel like those are the first things I tried, though I can't swear that I scrolled down very far in recent discussions. I wonder if there is a time lag?

Any chance it wasn't showing me those until I had participated in them?
Threads don't show as having unread items until you've posted in them. You have to keep an eye on the subjects and dates to see if any brand-new threads have appeared.

I think that depends on your notification settings: if you have set up email notifications for a particular thread then you will get told about the post... eg I heard that @clash_bowley had posted up the discussion starters before I had contributed. But if you don't have the settings right, you only get told about additional comments on some thread that you have contributed to (I think).
@Apocryphal said:
Probably because nobody created a category for it yet.
Sorry, but this doesn’t provide me with any practical advice for turning off the notifications.
I don’t have trouble finding recent comments. I just want to turn off notifications for those particular threads.
Well, I look at my profile now, and those threads are there and deselected for notification. But, like @Ray_Otus says about his experience, that option was not there when I first posted about it two days ago.

As opposed to causal... I'm looking at you, Christopher Priest! ;D

@Apocryphal - we need a category for this book so I can put up questions!
The questions are up! I invite anyone who has a good question not listed to post it up!
Where? I can't find them @clash_bowley
Look in the general "Discussion" view of the forum.
@Ray Otis - I decided to put them up even though there was no category for them yet. Better to ask for forgiveness than fail to act.

The pinned posts are the welcome thread and site rules, as well as announcements for upcoming club picks.
I typically go into the general main discussion list, and pick up the new threads from there.
I also have an RSS reader that finds the threads after a day or so.
